Viewing .mht files?

I have a number of .mht files saved. In order to view these, IE launches and takes an eternity to load. To further annoy me, IE will occ freeze and fail to load it. I can read .html files using PowerDesk's file viewer, but have found nothing for the .mht files.

Does IrfanView offer such a utility? Any help would be appreciated.

No. Its an archived HTML format. Try another browser such as Opera 10.1, Firefox, or Iron.

Came across such extension too. It was enough to rename it to '.htm' ..

Actually, it may work, but it doesn't need to, since mht is not just an HTML file, but an HTML page packaged with all the external elements in a MIME container. See here for a more accurate description and information about which browsers support it.

As MItaly pointed out, .MHT files are MIME encoded which allows all of the web page elements to be stored in a single file. That can be handy, but Internet Explorer is one of the few programs that can display them. FWIW, Internet Explorer can extract all of the elements packed into a .MHT file. Just open the file in IE and then do a Save As & pick "Web Page (*.htm; *.html). The supporting elements -- including the images -- will be saved to a subdirectory named for the base file. That is, if the web page is saved as "My Web Page.htm", the images will be in the "My Web Page_files" folder. IrfanView can be used to browse that folder.
